We’re psyched to announce a change in our concert lineup: National Geographic’s JANE in Concert. Based on 100 hours of unseen footage, this stunning documentary of Jane Goodall and her chimpanzee research will play on the big screen while The Florida Orchestra performs the score by Philip Glass live.
The film is a revelation. In 1960, the 26-year-old London debutante started a lifelong study of chimpanzees in Tanzania. With zero scientific training, she relied mainly on a notebook, binoculars and endless patience. It worked. Soon the chimps were taking bananas out of her hands. It was all captured on more than 100 hours of 16mm film by a National Geographic cameraman — Goodall’s future husband — and then somehow forgotten in a vault for more than 50 years!
“It felt like watching the moon landing when I saw [the footage],” award-winning director Brett Morgen told Vanity Fair.
All this amazing footage is set to a rich orchestral score from Philip Glass, which takes on new life as TFO performs it live on stage, below the screen. Glass is regarded as one of the most influential composers of the late 20th century; three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards.
The resulting documentary is an unprecedented, intimate portrait of a woman whose chimpanzee research challenged the male-dominated scientific consensus of her time and changed our understanding of the natural world. Today, Goodall, 85, is still active as one of the world’s most admired conservationists.
“In many ways, it’s a modern-day superhero film,” Morgen said in Vanity Fair. “But unlike Wonder Woman or Spider-Man, our protagonist is real, and we’re all the better for it.”
