Dukas: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Thierry Caens: Contrasts Trombone Concerto
Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique
This supernaturally charged concert opens with Paul Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, made famous by Mickey and a bewitched broom in Disney’s 1940 film Fantasia. The psychedelic trip continues with Hector Berlioz’s epic Symphonie Fantastique, a self-portrait of passion, heartbreak and obsession. Plus, TFO’s Joël Vaisse performs the world-premiere version of Thierry Caens’ Contrasts trombone concerto, commissioned by The Florida Orchestra. Andrew Sewell conducts.
Author Kurt Loft, freelance writer and former music critic for The Tampa Tribune, provides detailed and informative program notes about the pieces on this program.
