Fresh start, fresh sound. Led by Michelle Merrill, this program kicks off the new year with music that feels bright and full of possibility. There’s the youthful spark of Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 1, written when he was just a teenager, alongside the gentle sunrise of Edvard Grieg’s Morning Mood and the simple, heartfelt beauty of Aaron Copland’s Shaker Melody. Then Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst brings a jolt of energy — fast, vibrant and full of life. At the center of it all, TFO cellist David Bender takes the spotlight in Max Bruch’s Kol Nidrei, a deeply expressive work that unfolds with quiet intensity. This concert is the perfect way to reset and recharge.

Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 1
Grieg: Morning Mood
Copland: Shaker Melody
Jessie Montgomery: Starburst
