Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6: Masterworks

“I love it as I have never loved any one of my musical offspring before,” Tchaikovsky said of his Symphony No. 6, “Pathetique.” Is the tender, beautiful work a declaration of forbidden love? Tchaikovsky died just 10 days after he conducted the premiere in 1893. Barber’s lyrical Violin Concerto is in the hands of international award-winning violinist Stella Chen, and the evening begins with a meditative arrangement of Valentin Silvestrov’s Prayer for Ukraine. Earl Lee conducts.

For every Masterworks concert, Michael Francis has personally chosen a surprise “mystery piece” to enhance the live experience. What will it be this weekend?
